VISITOR numbers took a hit as South Cumbria's first major agricultural show of the summer fell victim to the weather.

A sodden Longrigg Farm showfield at Urswick was not an appealing prospect for some and they stayed away in droves leading to a fall in attendance compared to last year's bumper crowd.

But those who did turn out despite the deluge saw the weather lift in the afternoon and were treated to a splendid agricultural showcase despite the show jumping being called off.

Putting a brave face on it all, despite the morning's incessant showers, show president Mark Towers said: "It's been tremendous.

"I couldn't have asked for it to be any better. I'm sure a few people may have been put off and it's a pity it's been like it has, but the effort that has gone to today is just fantastic.

"I've been going around all the trade stands, all the cattle and all the livestock and the standard is just phenomenal.

"Considering what they've had to put up with in the last few hours (standing in the rain) makes it all the more remarkable.

"It's grown and matured has the North Lonsdale Show into a show of extremely high standards, and everything here today has been fantastic."

Jo Ward, in her first year as the show's secretary, said it had been a "challenging but amazing" day.

The North Lonsdale Agricultural Show also offers traders a chance to reach out to a big market, and although fewer people were in attendance this year, business owners noted a positive atmosphere.

Loraine Mason, of Barrow, was attending the show for a third time with her collection of kiln-formed glassworks. "Unfortunately it's not as busy this year because of the weather which is a bit of a shame," she said. "You can't do anything about it though and everyone is still cheerful and making the best of it and doing the best they can.

"It's normally a really good show with a lot of people and a really nice atmosphere here, but this year, unfortunately, doesn't really compare."

The supreme cattle champion prize went to Tom Stables, of Urswick, for his Holstein Friesian Heifer. He also picked up the top cattle award last year.

Supreme champion in sheep went to Urswick's James Airey for his Suffolk ewe.

"She's in good form, she's had a good show season up to now," he said. "She's a really big, strong, good ewe with all the breed qualities you want.

"We're just up the road from here so we like to support this one. It's a traditional agricultural show with a really good atmosphere, it's just a shame about the weather."
