James Airey (Letters, July 20, 'Reasons to vote Tory') pedals the opinion, "...outgoing Labour government had left the country almost bankrupt."

This analysis makes no sense. What is bankrupt is the economic model, initiated by a Tory government, perpetuated by New Labour, called neoliberalism.

It was the Tories who initiated the de-regulation of banking and encouraged friendly societies, mutuals and cooperatives to join the aggressive banking model.

It was this 'free market' philosophy that enabled the casino economy to flourish. Free riding, rent seeking and short-termism became the 'orthodox' way. This selfish, misanthropic, opportunistic behaviour, with its appalling acceptance of 'too big to fail', crashed in 2007-8.

The State baled-out the miscreants, representing a massive transfer of banking failure on to the UK taxpayer.

The 'there is no alternative' neoliberal orthodoxy has produced much perversity: including the bonus culture, massive inequalities inside and between societies, plastics pollution, species extinctions and atmospheric chaos from its warming - all examples of Commons Tragedies.

I agree representation by someone from within a locality is good and proper (Fish finger was not local). Our would-be MP said nothing about public transport in this area, such as plans to electrify the Windermere rail line, the poverty of performance by Northern Rail nor did he call for electrifying the Barrow line. Why not?

James Airey wrote about the Tories' "£8bn to take NHS forward"; but said nothing about where the £8bn would come from.

The Green Party agrees Financial Transaction Taxes (advocated by Prof Avinash Persaud and promoted by 'Robin Hood Tax' campaign) imposed on corporate bonds and derivatives would meet this funding requirement. Unfortunately, the former Chancellor, George Osborne, worked against leading EU states from instituting such tax.

Mrs May has asked for ideas. Instituting a Robin Hood Tax is one such very good idea. Unfortunately, as many will know, an idea is only good when the Boss proposes it. She's too late to claim this one and I've not heard the DUP suggest it as part of their support agreement.

There are, and there have to be alternatives. The Tories offer nothing new and no reason to vote for them.
