I was interested in the report about ‘A’ boards in Ulverston (Gazette, July 20, 'Council beefs up A-board stance'). It was surprising that Ulverston councillors seem to be ignorant as to Cumbria County Council’s policy on this matter.

CCC has, as part of its highways’ policy, adopted the guidelines laid down in the Ministry of Transport’s document ‘Inclusive Mobility’.

The guidelines referring to footpath/pavement obstructions include:- the maximum size of ‘A’ boards; where, and where not the should be located; the distance between the outer edge of the board and the pavement’s edge; only one such board per shop or business and so on.

Therefore, if Ulverston Town Council insists that all shops and businesses fully comply with the MoT Guidelines and CCC’s policy its problems should be solved.
