THE best of agriculture from Cumbria and further afield was on show at a record-breaking 134th Cartmel Show yesterday.

Entries were at a record high across all categories, with the re-appearance of Longhorn cattle at the show after a number of years’ absence being a particular highlight.

MORE TOP STORIES:

Show secretary Sarah Dickinson said: “It has been a very good day. We have had new breeds of cattle and a really good sheep entry of more than 500. The Longhorns are very exciting. They were bawling all night.”

Cartmel Agricultural Society chairman David Knipe praised the hard work of those involved in the event’s organisation.

“There are an unbelievable number of people here,” he said. “We had people aged from eight to 88 helping set everything up.

“Everybody contributes and wants to put on the best show possible for Cartmel. That’s all that we are after, and, judging from people’s faces, we have succeeded.”

The threatening weather led to some uncertainty over whether the event would go ahead. However, the organisers decided to brave it and press on.

Mr Knipe said: “We have had to adjust more than 90 per cent of the trade stands, as well as the main ring. We have never had to do that before. But thinking about cancelling is like somebody grabbing your guts. We made the decision to go ahead. Everybody has shown a ‘Dunkirk spirit’.”

This year even saw the show expanding towards the grandstand at its race course home. Show organisers were allowed the use of the race course’s hospitality marquee to house the village industries and horticultural entries.

Special new areas were also created for the dog show and the Working Hunter horse section, while the food hall expanded once again on last year’s offering and included the addition of the food theatre, featuring demonstrations from L’Enclume chef Simon Rogan.

The supreme cattle champion prize was won by Barker and Johnston of Appleby, whose Limousin and British Blue cross bred bullock, Blackjack, also won best beast in the commercial beef class. Martin Barker, of Barker and Johnston, said: “He’s a good bullock with a good future. He’s 620 kilogrammes now, so he’s getting up to size for Christmas. We’ll be taking him to the Westmorland County Show and the winter shows.”

Janet Bushell, of the British Show Pony Society, was making her first appearance at the Cartmel Show, having been asked along to help judge the ridden mountain and moorland ponies.

“Cartmel is a lovely, traditional show. I am so impressed,” she said. “The setting sets it apart. We are in a lovely part of the country.”
