A NEAR-miss incident between a train and two pedestrians has led to the emergency closure of a level crossing in South Lakeland.

Network Rail closed the Bailey Lane footpath crossing at Grange-over-Sands for three weeks following the incident on Thursday July 13. That closure has been extended for a further 21 days to give Network Rail more time to evaluate the best and safest way to protect the public when they cross the railway at this crossing.

The rail company reported that the driver of the train that nearly struck the pair had sounded his horn and put on the emergency brakes. The couple continued to cross the line despite the action taken by the driver.
The busy crossing, which sits on the line between Carnforth and Barrow, sees around 50 trains per day travelling over it at speeds of up to 50mph.

Mark Killick, Network Rail’s chief operations officer for the railway in Cumbria, said: “After the near miss incident between the couple and the train, we have taken this step to help keep local people safe at this crossing while we assess all options available to us.

“The safety of passengers and everyone who comes into contact with the railway is our top priority. We are keen to improve safety at this location and will continue discussions with the local council to try and find a permanent solution to this issue.”
