Boos rang out from members of the crowd after United States sprinter Justin Gatlin won the blue ribband men’s 100m race on Sunday night at the Athletics World Championships at London’s Olympic Stadium.

Many had predicted (and hoped) that sprinting legend Usain Bolt would win the title – which would have been a perfect end to his 100m career as this was his last race at that distance in a major championships.

The jeers came because Gatlin has been given two drugs bans in the past. The first, in 2001, was halved from two years following an appeal that a positive test had been due to medication he had been taking since childhood, when he was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder.

His second suspension, after testing positive for testosterone in 2006, was later halved to four years on appeal.

But the incident has again ignited the debate about whether an athlete who has had a doping violation should be given a lifetime ban from competing.
