THIS time of year is a time for change for us and for our children.

As summer comes to an end our thoughts turn to future weeks and months ahead, and change will be a big part of this. Whether your children are starting nursery, school, college, university or a job for the first time, or merely moving into another class or level of study, preparing them for these changes ahead of time can reap great benefits.

Keeping your children involved throughout the transition is key. Talk to your children about what is about to change and what will be required from you all as a family i.e. being ready earlier in the morning, making sure their uniform is ready, or catching a bus.

Listen to their worries and concerns. These may be small worries to you, though to your children they may seem insurmountable. Remember, life experience often gives you confidence; use the wisdom you have gained to guide them.

Be gentle with your little one if they are anxious or they are finding it difficult to adjust to the idea of change. We all feel reluctant to change sometimes, especially if we are comfortable with certain aspects of our lives. Patience, love and lots of encouragement will help them to move on and adapt to the changes and challenges ahead.

All families go through change at some point or other whether it’s through divorce, moving home or relocating to another part of the country/world. Keeping your children and their hopes and desires central to everything you decide will help immensely with the transition.
