He was revived at the scene and flown to hospital, but the air ambulance had to divert its course from Blackpool to Lancaster after Mr Hogg's condition worsened.

Mr Hogg, who suffered from angina, had another cardiac arrest at the hospital, and died.

Speaking to the Gazette, Mr Hogg's son John said: "Although we knew he had heart disease we used to call him 'Billy Ten Men'. He would take on anything; nothing would stop him.

"This was a big shock to family members and other dog walkers and friends. He was one of those sorts of people who used to talk to everyone he met.

"He had gone for a long walk with his dog, as he always would, at about 7.30am, and got short of breath when he reached the top of the hill and collapsed.

"Two passers by - who we would love to get in touch with us so we can thank them - tried to resuscitate him and called the ambulance.

"We found out when the police took his dog and car back to his partner's house, and I was the first one at the hospital in Lancaster."

Although medical staff managed to stabilise Mr Hogg, his condition again worsened and he died before they take further action.

John Hogg added: "Dad was a character and he is going to be missed.

"His dog was his life, and he also had a massive passion for cars. He really was a family man. He loved his family and grandchildren.

"Above everything else he was cheeky. He went out of his way to be cheeky. He liked to wind people up a bit."

Mr Hogg was born in Kendal and attended Roundhill School. After leaving school he worked as a boiler man for the Milk Marketing Board.

He is survived by his partner, children John and Suzanne, and eleven grandchildren.

The funeral be held at Beetham crematorium at 3.30pm on the August 25. A gathering to celebrate Mr Hogg's life and share stories will follow at Netherfield Cricket Club all who knew Billy are welcome.
