THE emotions of a history-making night at the World Athletics Championships proved to be too much for one Kendal councillor.

Superfan Phil Walker, who sits on South Lake District Council and Kendal Town Council, could not hold back the tears as Team GB's gold-winning 4x100m relay team thanked him for his long-standing support.

The BBC's cameras at the London Stadium caught the moment he took a watery-eyed selfie with Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, who moments before had carried the baton down the back straight to seal the third-fastest time ever recorded in the event. CJ Ujah, Adam Gemili and Danny Talbot were the other members of the relay quartet.

"I had been there all week for the athletics, I go all over to see it," said cllr Walker. "I was alright and then they came over to thank me for following them and I just broke down.

"CJ said: 'You go absolutely everywhere for us, thank you.' Mitchell-Blake then said: 'That's absolute passion.' and that's when I lost it.

"It just the atmosphere in the stadium and everything, it was incredible."

BBC presenter Gabby Logan, commentating on the pictures, said: "Look at the emotion, what amazing scenes.

"They're so happy those fans because to win a relay is such a prestigious thing."

Mr Walker said it was a huge shock to see Team GB win gold in the 4x100m event, and it certainly was not how the night had been scripted.

Legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt was also running the race, and it had been billed as the swansong to his glittering career.

Unfortunately for Bolt, he pulled up with a hamstring injury, preventing him from being able to do anything but witness Mitchell-Blake hold off the USA's Christian Coleman to cross the line in first.
