THOUSANDS of public phone boxes across the country are to be removed after a 90 per cent fall in their use in just ten years.

BT says half of Britain's remaining kiosks will be axed to save on maintenance costs - despite 33,000 calls a day being made from those still in use.

The company says many have those that have fallen into disuse have been vandalised or daubed with graffiti.

Phone box use has fallen dramatically during the phenomenal rise of mobile phone ownership.

Around 2,400 of the traditional red iron phone boxes will be spared the axe because they are Grade ll listed.
