The Rydal Sheep Dog Trials and Hound Show celebrated one of its best entries in years, as owners turned out in force to demonstrate their animals' skill.

The Lake District tradition drew the attention visitors from far away, as the trials featured as the subject of a German documentary.

Spectators were also in abundance, with hound trailing also on offer at Rydal Park, just outside of Ambleside.

Show chairman Claire Logan Stephens said: "We have great entries today. It is a little bit soft under foot but we have got everything out onto the field.

"We have done particularly well on the sheep dog trials, where we have over 120 dogs running in the various classes throughout the day.

"We had a good turnout too. People like Rydal show because it is very traditional and has an amazingly beautiful setting.

"People are very loyal here and come back every year. They can make friends with like-minded people.

"It is fantastic to be able to sit on the hill and watch. The sheep are from the Fairfield Horseshoe, so they rarely see a sheep dog. They can be quite challenging, so it is a real spectator sport."

John Graham has been competing in sheep dog trials for ten years. He was at Rydal with he two border collies Meg and Sally.

He said: "It's a perfect course here. Sometimes the sheep can be difficult, and sometimes not so bad. Today the Herdwicks were running quite well.

"Meg was just out on the course and she did well with some difficult sheep. But she was really just warming up for the bigger course later today.

"Meg doesn't give up easily and she likes sheep that play up. She gets stuck into them and usually gets results."

The sheep dog trials were under the spotlight as part of a German documentary which looks at the landscapes painted by different artists.

Broadcast on French-German station 'Arter', the episode filming at the trials focussed on William Turner.

Director Ina Kessebohm, from Hamburg, said: "We don't have this in Germany. Some people own border collies, but not in such a big way as this. It's really interesting.

"This is a really lovely area. As we approached from the north we were excited to film in such a nice place."
