A GROUP of funnily-dressed mountaineers will be tackling a notorious Lake District scramble for charity.

A team of volunteers made-up as Oompa Loompas, the orange helpers from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, will be climbing Jack's Rake in aid of The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association.

The hikers are from an informal walking group called Lakeland Meet Ups.

Organiser Richard Jennings said: "I just had the idea that we could get dressed up and do Jack's Rake. I chose Oompa Loompas because they just look a bit different and it will make us stand out.

"The others weren't keen at first but I managed to persuade them. We had to wait a while for the first person to go and get the costume. He bought it and got dressed up and posted the pictures on social media. He panicked a bit at first because it took a while for anybody else to go and do it, but they all are doing it now.

"There are over twenty of us taking part.

"We are all avid fell walkers so we chose to raise the money for the overarching mountain rescue group, so it won't help just one team.

"I am really looking forward to the walk and the group photo we take beforehand."

Jack's Rake is a famously difficult grade 1 scramble in the Langdale Pikes near Ambleside.

It slices across the face of Pavey Ark, and is accessible by a short trip up Stickle Ghyll.

The group will meet on August 28 at the Stickle Barn at 9am, with the aim to start walking for 10am. Other people are welcome to join the group and take on the challenge.

The group has already reached its original £300 target online, however further donations are still welcomed.
