EXHIBITOR numbers were up at Ulverston Gardeners' Society annual show this year, including a good showing in the junior categories.

This year's show, held in Ulverston's Coronation Hall, received 605 entries from some 102 exhibitors.

"The numbers were up quite a bit from last year," said show secretary, Mavis Woodburn, explaining that last year had 68 exhibitors.

"The weather as usual plays a great part in the number of exhibits appearing on the Show Bench. As you know we have had a long spell of wind and rain in the months leading up to the show with some of our exhibitors not able to produce as many entries."

Mrs Woodburn also said there was a large increase in the number of junior exhibitors, from 88 to 143. She explained that this was in part thanks to the Dalton Brownies taking part this year.

Unfortunately, poor weather did mean that some exhibitors were not able to produce as many entries.

The Blue Ribbon for Best Exhibit in the Show went to Daniel Graham, with an 'outstanding' vase of three medium/semi cactus Dahlias.

Mrs Woodburn described Mr Graham's prizewinning blooms as 'absolutely lovely'.

Second best exhibit was won by Mr K Hardman with three onions grown from seed.

"Grateful thanks go out to all the people who gave up their time to help make the show a success and not forgetting the exhibitors themselves without whom we would not have a show," Mrs Woodburn said. "Please come back again next year and we hope for better growing weather.

"The committee, as few as we are, will try to keep the show going for as long as we are able. We hope to encourage more exhibitors next year."

The show date for 2018 September 8.
