ROADWORKS and a fatal road traffic collision on the M6 are causing delays this morning (September 13).

The northbound carriageway of the M6 is closed and there is heavy traffic due to barrier repairs and accident investigation work between J41 B5305 (Catterlen) and J42 A6 B6263 (Carlisle South).

A man has died following a road traffic collision that occurred at around 11:50pm yesterday (September 12).

The collision involved one vehicle, a grey Range Rover, on the M6 northbound at Southwaite.

The driver, a man in his 60s from outside the county, was the only occupant of the vehicle. The family of the man have been informed.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 12:27am firefighters were called to a road traffic collision involving a single vehicle on the M6 northbound between junction 41 and 42.

“Crews, one from Penrith and one from Lazonby, found the incident involved one car which had left the carriageway.

“They used small hand tools to release a male casualty who was then taken to hospital by paramedics.

“Crews were at the scene for 45 minutes.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anybody with any information that could assist with enquiries.

Barrier repairs are being completed and all vehicles have been recovered.

The road closed at around 12.30am.

For the diversion, follow the solid triangle symbol. Exit the M6 at J41 and take the fourth exit onto the B5305. At Stoneybeck roundabout take the A6 northbound. Continue on the A6 northbound to the Golden Fleece roundabout and re-join the M6 at J42
