A HOUSE dating back to the 1700s has been given a new lease of life by a Kendal property developer.

Andrew Broomby, the director of K-Town Properties has worked to transform 134 Highgate, turning the Georgian house into a ‘business hub’, comprising eight office spaces.

“It’s something that was sold off in a horrendous state,” Mr Broomby, who lives in Kendal, said. “I have spent the last year putting it back to its former glory with its Georgian features.”

The property is said to have been built on the site of some old weaving shops by John Davidson of Hill Top in about 1798.

“Their elegant fronts are typical of the work of Kendal architect Francis Webster,” the building’s Kendal Civic Society green plaque states.

Three of the office spaces have already been earmarked but there are still five available throughout the property’s three floors.

“It’s possibly one of the nicest buildings in Kendal,” Mr Broomby, 51, said. “It’s got a gorgeous Georgian front.

“It’s more for start-up businesses or people moving up a notch.

“If you are dealing with clients it gives a good impression to clients without having to purchase a big building.”

The Highgate offices are the second venture for K Town Properties, which Mr Broomby set up just over two years ago.

The former Windermere School outdoor education instructor has also turned Stramongate House, another Georgian property, into letting offices over three floors.

He told the Gazette that his main interest lies with older buildings.

“My parents have always lived in old houses,” he said. “So I’ve been brought up in those kind of houses.

“It looks fantastic. It’s so good. I get excited about it when I think about it myself.”

Rents for the offices will start from £2,300 per annum (no VAT) which will include utility bills. Some of the spaces can accommodate up to six people.

Car parking spaces are available at the rear of the property and offices will benefit from the use of communal kitchens and a post room.
