LARGE boulders have been placed at the former New Road car park this afternoon to prevent motorists using the site.

The unnofficial free car park closed two weeks ago and that decision was ratified by South Lakeland District Council's overview and scrutiny commitee last week.

The council says the car park has to close because of health and safety and legal concerns raised in reports written by the council's officers and independent audits.

But the ruling has caused anger among regular users of the car park, where around 180 vehicles regularly used to park.
