PROTESTORS against the closure of New Road car park took their opposition to the next level on Tuesday night, as they removed boulders from around the side and parked cars and motorbikes on the controversial land.

Live videos posted to the 'Keep free parking in New Road' Facebook page showed a number of vehicles on the site, as well as people with signs calling for the council to reverse their decision.

Cars could be heard to be honking their horns in support for the protest as they passed.

Organiser Andy Milliard, who runs the Facebook group, said: "The protest went very well. We had a lot of support once again.

"We had signs asking people to pip their horns in support, and that was happening all night, which shows we have a lot more support than people think we do.

"I think anybody who is incompetent should resign. The council are elected to do what the public wants, and in doing this they are going against that."

The boulders were put up around the perimeter of the car park last week in order to prevent vehicles from using the car park, which was closed because it was unlawful on health and safety grounds.

The decision to close the car park by the SLDC cabinet has sparked outrage among Kendal residents, who promised in the video that there would be further protests.

The boulders were replaced using a digger on Wednesday morning, and cars are no longer on the site.

SLDC will be discussing at full cabinet next week the provision of money to treat the land at New Road.

The estimated projected cost for the treatment of contaminated land on the site equates to £255,000. There is also an estimated £3,500 cost for the annual maintenance of the 'interim reinstatement works'.
