NATALIE Morrell and Simon McElligott have that special knack of being able to create fresh and original theatre in a dynamic and visual style.

Under the banner of The Knotted Project, they have put together some really imaginative and entertaining physical theatre.

On Saturday, October 28 (11am), Kendalians Natalie and Simon perform their latest work Chit Chat Chalk Show at York Theatre Royal’s Take Over Festival, before heading off on a UK tour in February with dates at Kendal's Brewery Arts Centre and Theatre by the Lake at Keswick.

A family show, the piece is a joint effort along with Hawk Dance Theatre, an exciting contemporary dance company based in Manchester, currently company in residence at the University of Salford, directed by another hugely talented Kendal performer Josh Hawkins.

Themes in the show explore identity, displacement and emotional resilience in young children.

Brilliantly devised by two of the UK's freshest and innovative young companies, the show cleverly, interactively and yet with a playful charm, delivers a powerful message about just how important it is for children to talk about their feelings.

There is definitely more to it than a simple slice of fun-filled theatre for three to eight year olds.

Simon says that the show explores the idea of displacement and the points of departure in life that many children experience: "We investigate how children often find themselves in a new environment feeling unsure and vulnerable."

Chit Chat Chalk tells the story of Kiko, a confused young girl, struggling to understand how she feels about the strange new world she lives in. With her new friends, she embarks upon a quest to discover the mixture of emotions and colours that make her unique.

Continues Simon: "The show revolves around a young girl who experiences being an outsider but how her life becomes colourful again through building new friendships, allowing her to embrace the world she now lives in."

Natalie and Simon's last Brewery performance in 2015 was Lonely Hearts, which proved to be the perfect platform for their skills and inventiveness as both performers and writers.

Hawk Dance create, explore and inspire audiences by offering work that is engaging and accessible. Founded by Josh in 2015, HDT spent the year supported at the Brewery on its Emerging Artist Programme.

Josh has produced works for stage, screen and festivals, which have been showcased throughout the UK. He was commissioned to create a Random Acts film by Tyneside Cinema, which was broadcast on Channel 4’s TV platform in November 2015.

Both Natalie and Josh were among the rising stars of the Brewery Arts Centre's youth drama and dance groups, that lit up London's South Bank in 2008 with stunning performances at two of the capital’s illustrious theatres, the National and Peacock, under the expert guidance of Tricia Gordon and Helen Moffitt.
