WALNA Scar Shepherds Meet takes place on Saturday (November 4). Historically, when sheep strayed onto a neighbour’s heaf they were gathered and returned at the meet; that was, of course, before the days of Land Rovers and trailers. Today, the meet is more akin to social gatherings where sheep (Herdwicks and Swaledales) compete for cups and rosettes, children show their pets and shepherds meet for the crack. There’s also hound trails, displays of decorative crooks and sticks and usually lots of mud at Brigg House Field, Torver, so don’t forget your wellies! And later, everyone will meet in the Church House Inn for singing, poetry readings and much quaffing of ale! A great community event.

Remember, remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot - did you know that Bonfire Night, otherwise known as Guy Fawkes Night, used to be a compulsory celebration in England up until 1859. After the failure of Catholic conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament on November 5, 1605, English citizens were obliged to celebrate the deliverance of the King on each anniversary of the putting down of the heinous plot.
