A SOUTH Lakeland couple who lost their life savings to scammers have given their backing a proposed fraud hotline number.

Much like the 999 emergency service, a new number for people who believe they have been victims of bank fraud could be introduced.

The idea, being examined by Financial Fraud Action UK, would allow victims to call 555 if they suspect fraud, and log the crime with their banks and the police.

Arnside couple Jane and Stephen Caldwell were duped into handing over more than £100,000 to fraudsters earlier this year. They suspected foul play at the time, but Mrs Caldwell said the professionalism of the criminals and difficulty in knowing who to call meant the fraud continued despite her reservations.

She said she would support the new plan, describing a one-stop shop for reporting bank fraud as an 'excellent idea'.

"When it happened we didn't know who to call," she said. "You ring your own fraud department but there were two banks involved, and they told us to ring Action Fraud.

"There were a lot of calls to make when really you're in a state of shock and worry.

"If, when it was happening, my husband could have called 555 then we could have got some advice at the very least.

"It's comparable to being burgled. If that happens you ring 999, so a direct fraud line is a very good idea."

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has written to Sarah Newton, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Crime, Safeguarding and Vulnerability, urging the government to push ahead with the plans.

“The proposal for a hotline for people who are worried that they are being scammed is a positive step forward to helping those who fear they may be being targeted by fraudsters," said Mr Farron.

“However, at the moment these are just proposals – which is why I’m urging the government to commit to put the 555 hotline into action as quickly as possible.

“The government must also not forget about those who have been victims of fraud in the past like Jane and Stephen, who were let down by their banks who refused to help them after they lost all of their life savings.

“Those who have already fallen victim must be supported and given compensation."
