AN oak tree was planted in Nobles Rest park to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the formation of Kendal Natural History Society.
The society was founded in 1946 with ten members which grew to 300 by the 1990s.
There was an earlier society which started in 1835 whose chairman was the famous geologist Adam Sedgwick. William Wordsworth was also a honorary member. This society set up and ran the Kendal Natural History Museum for nearly 100 years and went through several name changes before disbanding in the 20th century.
South Lakeland District Council provided the plot and the society received help from its arboricultural officer, Graham Nicolson, while the post and plaque was made by Roger Paddison with the tree being supplied by Cumbria Wildlife Trust.
