TWO CUMBRIAN businesswomen have joined forces to ‘enhance lives’ and ‘stimulate communication’ through the use of colour.

Janet Carter, from Lyth and Sally Tears, from Carlisle, are the duo behind Colour in Care, a business that offers engaging colouring sessions to its clients.

“It’s a proven concept that colour engages the brain,” Janet explained. “It’s a double thing - we want to empower people to be able to have their own income and enhance the lives of others in the community through colour.”

Janet, who also works as a ‘kindness ambassador’ for a business called the Five Institute, explained that the sessions were for anyone.

So far the sessions had particularly benefitted those in care homes, those with autism, plus they had had interest from Help for Heroes as well as a school in Tanzania.

The business has, in part, been inspired by Janet’s own experience with drawings and colours.

Just before her dad passed away from cancer two years ago, she drew a bright picture of a sunshine for him.

“The drawing that’s triggered a lot of this is the weekend that I lost him I just drew a beautiful sunshine with him,” she said. “I sat with him and it was the last thing that he responded to really.

“It was bringing a light into a tragic situation.

“To be able to go out and do something like this is just amazing.”

Colour in Care provides the materials so that consultants can go into homes and establishments independently.

Although it has just launched in the UK the pair believe it will be a global business.

Janet, 51, said that they had seen great success with older people in care homes but with a background in the police, she believes that the concept will also benefit those interviewing children.

“I’ve designed some stickers that are faceless or have faces on and they can show if they’re happy or sad.

“The children can draw faces on them or put them in a house or a certain area.”
