HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned to keep a step ahead of November's wet weather by British Gas.

The company says that, despite the risk of leaks and costly water damage, one in seven households has not yet made sure their homes are ready for winter.

Meanwhile, more than one third of people say they don't know how to clear their gutters of autumn leaves and debris ahead of heavy rain forecast for the coming weeks.

Cumbria saw the rainiest day of year in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and it also holds the record for the wettest day so far this year, with 137mm of rain failing at Seathwaite in just 24 hours on October 11.

British Gas engineer Sheena Anker said: "November often brings heavy rainfall to parts of the country, but you can stay a step ahead of both wet and cold weather by carrying out some simple tasks such as cleaning out gutters, insulating pipes and maintaining your boiler."

She has this timely advice for householders:

- Maintain your drains. It's a good idea to make sure they are clear of debris at the point at which they enter the ground. This involves checking your gullies for leaves and twigs to ensure they don't restrict water flow at any point.

- Insulate your pipes. Burst pipes are a huge issue during winter months. To help prevent burst pipes, ensure all pipes are properly insulated by using lagging, which can be bought cheaply from most DIY shops.

- Block the breeze. Make sure all your windows and doors seal properly to stop warm air escaping. For those that don’t, fitting draught excluders, which you can buy from most DIY stores, is a quick and cheap way to cut down on energy bills.

- Wrap up your water tank and insulate hot water. Again, the materials can be purchased from most DIY stores and help to conserve heat and save you money.
