A RENOWNED Cumbrian filmmaker has been awarded a prestigious national accolade for his film about the iconic Lakes mountain Blencathra.

Terry Abraham received the Broadcast Programme of the Year Award at the Travel Media Awards 2017 in London.

It was presented for Life of a Mountain: A Year on Blencathra, which aired on BBC Four in February.

For the film, a sequel to A Year on Scafell Pike, Mr Abraham shot a series of spectacular scenes of Blencathra and the surrounding area.

From spring lambs to winters snows, it looked at the lives of residents, schoolchildren and visitors to the mountain with contributions from comedian Ed Byrne, broadcaster Stuart Maconie, mountaineer Alan Hinkes and record breaking fell runner Steve Birkinshaw.

The film project was partly sponsored by The Blencathra Field Centre, and centre head Tim Foster accompanied Terry to the ceremony.

Mr Foster said: “As one of the sponsors, this has been a tremendous boost in raising the profile of Blencathra, the Northern Fells, Keswick and Eden.

"The Blencathra film is the second in the Life of a Mountain trilogy, highlighting iconic Lake District mountains and this award builds on the anticipation for the third and final in the series which focuses on Helvellyn.”

It is the third award won by the Blencathra programme, following prizes from Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild and Cumbria Life.
