FIREWORKS will light up the skies of South Lakeland in a host of sparkling displays to celebrate Bonfire Night.

Festivities start tonight and will continue across the weekend to mark Guy Fawkes’s failed gunpowder plot.

At Oxenholme’s Station Inn tonight there is a display and barbecue starting at 6pm. The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm before the fireworks kick off at 7pm.

Tomorrow (November 3) Coniston Sports and Social Centre will be open from 5pm. At 6pm the bonfire will be fired up with the pyrotechnic display at 7pm. Entry is by donation.

Also on Friday is Kendal’s firework extravaganza at the Rugby Club on Shap Road. It is being organised along with the Upper Dales Fireworks Committee, and starts at 7.30pm with doors opening at 5pm. There will be live music, a licensed bar, burgers, hotdogs, doughnuts, rides and novelties.

Cartmel bonfire and fireworks display will be held on November 4 at the racecourse. Hot food will be available from 5.30pm. The fire will be lit at 6.30pm and the fireworks start at 7.30pm. Organisers have warned people not to take fireworks or sparklers along for safety reasons.

On the same night at 6pm the Cartmel Fell Community Trust hosts a bonfire and firework evening at Cartmel Fell Parish Hall. The bonfire will flare up at 6.30pm. There will be a lantern procession with a Guy and a hot pot supper, plus homemade sweets and mulled wine.

On Saturday there are displays and barbecues at Arnside Pier at 6pm and at Windermere RUFC, Dawes Meadow, at 6.30pm, featuring a barbecue, food and more.

Hawkshead’s firework display starts at 5.30pm on the recreational ground and there will be snacks and entertainment for those attending. No sparklers are permitted.

Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club has entertainment, hot food and more at Underley Park. The bonfire is lit at 7.15pm.

And Ulverston Golf Club’s display at Bardsea Park starts at 4pm.

Over in Hawes the free firework display has been running for more than 15 years and continues to evolve and will light up the night sky on Sunday. One of the organisers, Griff Thomas, now holds British Pyrotechnics Association “senior firer” status.

"This has allowed us to partner with national provider Fantastic Fireworks and put on a show which punches well above its weight for the size of the town," he said.

Many of the team involved in the Hawes Community Field display will also be rigging up the Kendal display tomorrow night.
