SPECTACULAR fireworks lit up the autumn night skies - nowhere more so than Arnside, where 4,500 people were wowed by a sparkling display.

At Kendal's recently opened rugby club, an estimated 3,500 to 4,000 people packed the ground to watch fireworks cascade and shimmer in time to Jerusalem, Rule, Britannia! and Land of Hope and Glory.

At Sedbergh School, students, families, staff and townsfolk watched firecrackers and Roman candles explode over the field between School House and Sedgwick House, before warming up with mulled wine and hot dogs.

Windermere Rugby Club's "very successful" gathering featured a live band, and the extra bars and improvements to catering were described as "fantastic".

In Holme, a crowd of 600 to 700 remembered the 5th of November with "a fabulous display of colour and noise for over half an hour".

Barbecued burgers, sausages and lamb hotpot kept busy crowds warm at Coniston Sports and Social Club and at Oxenholme's Station Inn, landlord David Hughes and the team served up pie and pea suppers as well as a bonfire and fireworks.

Meanwhile, in Hawes, Dales folk enjoyed a stunning display by award-winning company Fantastic Fireworks.
