SPECTACULAR fireworks lit up the autumn night skies - nowhere more so than Arnside, where 4,500 people were wowed by a sparkling display.

At Kendal's recently opened rugby club, an estimated 3,500 to 4,000 people packed the ground to watch fireworks cascade and shimmer in time to Jerusalem, Rule, Britannia! and Land of Hope and Glory.

At Sedbergh School, students, families, staff and townsfolk watched firecrackers and Roman candles explode over the field between School House and Sedgwick House, before warming up with mulled wine and hot dogs.

Windermere Rugby Club's "very successful" gathering featured a live band, and the extra bars and improvements to catering were described as "fantastic".
