PLANS to replace Croftlands Junior School, Ulverston, have been given the go-ahead by Cumbria County Council.
The existing school is to be demolished once the new, 240-pupil capacity school has been built at Oakwood Drive.
According to planning documents, the new building is needed because the school's timber frame has deteriorated, outside cladding has failed and there is "widespread asbestos". Children also have to pass through one classroom to reach another.
Croftlands Infant School will be unaffected.
