Two weeks ago, The Westmorland Gazette quite rightly reported on the discussion that took place in the planning committee of South Lakeland District Council, which was considering ways in which it could streamline its processes given its heavy workload.

Officers provided a range of alternatives for the committee’s consideration. One of these was to limit the number of speakers from the public.

It is, of course, the committee’s decision as to the recommendations it makes to council as to how it carries out its responsibilities. However, we would like to correct the possible impression that the political leadership of the council is in favour of any restriction of the number of public representations.

We are not. We believe strongly in the democratic process. We support giving residents and other interested parties a chance to contribute in writing and orally. Although committee process is largely a committee decision, we will be arguing against limiting the number of speakers from the public.
