AN EXCITED crowd gathered on Bowness Promenade to watch as The One Show's Rickshaw Challenge pass through the town on Tuesday.

As the cycling precession passed by, spectators cheered and cars honked their horns in support of the epic charitable undertaking.

The Rickshaw team, all of whom have been helped by Children in Need, are pedalling the 500-miles north from London to Glasgow in aid of the charity.

The passage through Bowness was part of the punishing 59-mile leg from Morecambe to Penrith, which took place on day six of the challenge.

Accompanying the team was Matt Baker, presenter of The One Show, who rode alongside the rickshaw in which the team pulled Pudsey Bear.

Co-presenter Alex Jones followed the team from the studio, supporting them along the way.

Mike and Irene Pearson support the event every year, and this year were thrilled to find it was passing close by to their home in Ulverston.

They were the first to arrive on the Promenade.

Irene said: "This is a great cause. We think it is brilliant to support children who are less fortunate than most, and to see them making an effort like this is really amazing.

"That it when it really hits home; when you see the children working so hard."

Mike added: "There are so many people who benefit so much from Children in Need. We want to support this and try and give something back."

Earlier on in the day the welcoming party from Silverdale holiday park also had a £500 cheque ready to support the TV fundraising epic.

The donation produced a big thumbs up from Matt Baker as he cycled alongside alongside the team of six rickshaw riders.

Children from local primary schools, including Levens, also cheered the riders on as they passed by.

The Rickshaw Challenge set off from Broadcasting House in London on November 9. They are due to arrive at the finish line on the Clyde in Glasgow on November 17, during the 2017 Children in Need Appeal Show on the BBC.
