A CHARITY collection box was callously stolen from a popular chip shop.

The RNLI box, which was full, was taken from the Arnside Chip Shop between 2.45pm and 3pm on November 18.

It was taken by a man who entered the shop and stole it while the staff's backs were turned.

The shop has a web cam installed so that people can check how busy it is, and the theft was spotted by somebody who was watching.

Mike Crabtree, chair of the Arnside RNLI branch, said: "It just shows how low people will stoop to take collection boxes put out for charity.

"They are clearly not thinking about anybody else when they take it."

Mr Crabtree wanted to warn other businesses to take care that any collection boxes in their shops were not stolen.

Police are investigating the incident.
