A CHARITY that helps disabled children with horse riding and carriage driving has been given a generous gift by local Freemasons.

Members of Heversham Lodge gave £1,000 to the Riding for the Disabled Association's Westmorland Group at Holmescales Riding Centre, Old Hutton.

Past lodge master Keith Bolton presented a cheque to Jan Mitchell, the group's president and former groom to Penny Royal, five times winner of the Horse of the Year Show.

Charity trustee Annette Poulsom said: "This kind and generous donation is so very much appreciated. We are a small charity and have to hire the horses, ponies and equipment, which is very expensive to do. The money will be used to fund the provision and promotion of riding and carriage driving for disabled children. On behalf of our young beneficiaries, thank you all so much."
