Two appliances from Kendal, as well as police and paramedics, attended the call, made at 9.16am.

Firefighters using specialist gas monitoring equipment assessed the property, but found no presence of carbon monoxide gas within it.

Richard Gibson, watch manager at Kendal Fire Station, said the callout was due to a faulty detector, and stressed the importance of having a working one fitted.

"Residents are advised not only to have a working smoke alarm, but a working carbon monoxide detector if they have gas appliances installed in their properties," he said.

"They should be tested on a regular basis and the batteries should be changed annually."
