CUMBRIA’S flute orchestra, Flutes and Co, presents a family-friendly Not Just a Christmas concert on Sunday, December 10 (3pm) led by musical director, Sue Nicholls. Staged at St Anne’s Church, Ings, the concert will open with an arrangement of Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque. Three local flute players Cathy Goss, Philip Gruar and Colin Blakey, have arranged pieces for the concert and there will be two original flute orchestra compositions Le Chateau Hante (The Haunted Castle) by Avinee and a piece with audience participation Voices of Nagasaki by Will Offermans. One of the many highlights of the concert promises to be an arrangement of Verdi’s Agnus Dei from the Requiem where the flute orchestra will be joined by international soprano soloist, Jane Irwin. Christmas favourites including Troika and Walking in the Air will be performed in the second half.

Ten new members have joined the now 35 strong group of adults and young flute players from across Cumbria and north Lancashire. Piccolos, C flutes, alto, bass and contra bass flutes will be supported by a double bass player and percussionist.
