Name: Nick Wright

Companies: The Event Safety Group which ensures competitor safety and delivers expert healthcare at outdoor sport events and MedSkills Academy which is dedicated to improving and delivering first aid and medical education.

Length of time in role: I set up the original company in 2006 just before moving to the area to study outdoor education at St Martins College. Income generated from delivering outdoor first aid courses helped fund my studies. From studying outdoor studies I then went straight to study paramedic practice at UCLAN. What we do and how we do it has developed significantly over the past 11 years.

Number of employees: We employ around 90 adhoc, part time and full time staff. They fulfil clinical, education and clerical roles.

What was your first job? My first ever job was while I was still at school, working in a restaurant. Swiftly moved from pot wash duties through the ranks to working on the grill. I started a NVQ in catering before deciding I wanted to work in education.

What personal skills do you need in your job? As a paramedic I’m required to stay calm in very stressful situations and manage the care of a patient, while making complex clinical and non-clinical decisions. This puts me in good stead for the day-to-day running of the business and the management of the people we employ.

What’s your best business memory ? Any situation where myself or my team make a significant difference to anyone’s life, be it a patient we deal with at an event or influencing someone’s skill set or knowledge through facilitating their education.

And the worst? Emaciated feet! We get presented with a lot of foot problems, usually in poor conditioned runners or ultra distance runners. It’s amazing what state some competitors get themselves into.
