Name and job title: Oliver Harman, associate dentist

Company Name: Bupa Dental Care

Length of time in role: 10 months

Number of employees: Five at the practice

What was your first job: I started my career as a dentist in West Sussex – this was a great and solid start for me. Then, after meeting a dental technician who specialised in world-class natural cosmetic dentistry, I understood that was my real passion. I would say that meeting him changed my professional life.

What personal skills do you need in your current role? Performing cosmetic dentistry requires a unique ability to listen and understand your patient’s needs – getting to the heart of what is really bothering them is key. Some patients prefer to have minimal dentistry, while others want to go all the way to achieve the perfect smile. Everyone is different – this is part of the fascinating challenge.

What is your best business memory? I have two. One was achieving my Masters degree in Aesthetic Restorative dentistry – something that would have delighted my late father. The other was to be made Fellow of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry in 2010 – there is only another one in the country.

What is your worst business memory? One of my most daunting business memories was having to move away from the safety of providing NHS care in the early 90s to focusing on providing my patients with the best private care, hoping they would join me in the new adventure. I am glad to say they did.
