NETHERFIELD bowed out of the Thwaites League Cup with a 17-run defeat by St Annes as batsmen held sway at Parkside Road on Sunday.
St Annes opted to take first use on winning the toss and Adam Cotton and Gareth Evans formed the backbone of the effort with a fourth-wicket partnership of 97.
It catapulted Saints from 95-3 off 22 overs to 192 by the time Cotton was caught behind for 70 off 51 balls and including six sixes and five fours.
Evans fell just a run later for 51 but a late flourish took Saints to a useful score of 238-7 off the 40 overs. Chris Parry was pick of the home bowlers with 3-31.
Netherfield had worked their way into a similar pos-ition to the visitors at 95-4 in the 23rd over of their reply after Craig Parry (43) and Ryan Brown (23) held the top order together.
The arrival of South African Charl Langeveldt brought the acceleration sought to put Netherfield back into the argument as he and Tommy Prime blasted 47 in four overs in quarter of an hour.
Another couple of overs of this type of hitting would have made all the difference, but Langeveldt's dismissal for 54 off 29 balls, with five sixes and two fours, was, in retrospect, the turning-point.
Tommy Prime had made 31 when he was eighth man out, with Netherfield still requiring 38 runs for victory off four overs. It was too much and at the close they were still 17 short on 221-9.
Dave Taylor took 3-50, including the vital wicket of the home professional.
