A MAN who butted his partner as he attacked her twice in a fortnight at her South Lakeland home has been jailed.

Stuart Barwise, 33, left Katie Murray bloodied and it resulted in her visiting hospital following his first assault in Kendal during early October.

Carlisle Crown Court heard Barwise struck Miss Murray on the arm with a sweeping brush before grabbing hold of her hair and delivering a butt to her face. Initial fears her nose was broken proved unfounded.

The court heard that on October 15, Barwise turned violent again, grabbing Miss Murray around the throat and later hitting her in the face. He then engaged police in a nine-hour stand-off, waving a knife from an open window and threatening to slit his own throat if officers approached.

After being arrested, Barwise spat at a police constable as attempts were made to transport him from custody to court.

He was sentenced today having admitted twice assaulting Miss Murray - once causing actual bodily harm - and assaulting a PC.

The court heard heavily-convicted Barwise, of no fixed address, had shown remorse and regret for his latest crimes.

But Recorder Julie Clemitson rejected appeals for him to be given a suspended sentence, imposing instead an immediate 22-month jail term.
