Name: Deborah Jones

Role: Proprietor at Deborah Jane Bridal, Morecambe

Length of time in role: 10 years as proprietor at Deborah Jane Bridal

What was your first job? My first ever job was in a shoe shop, I was 14. I’d lied about my age to get the job and was sacked on the spot when I got found out. Some people would call that initiative, but the HMRC disagreed! Later, after graduation, I took a fashion buying role.

What personal skills do you need in your current role? I have an extensive knowledge on shape, fabric, fit and styling which helps each bride to find their perfect dress. I’m a people person and have never believed in a “hard sell”. From choosing the gown to the final fitting, I’ve spent hours with the bride and met her mum, sister and friends, so you’ve got to like being with people to do my job!

What is your best business memory? Probably the very first sale I made. I can still remember the dress, the venue and every detail even now. Ten years later I dressed this same bride’s daughter for her prom, which was a very special moment.

What is your worst business memory? Stress is unavoidable in the bridal industry as every wedding has to be perfect and there are no second chances. However, the weekend of my brothers wedding is the most memorable as I had nine weddings that weekend and then his to do. Of course, the customers had to come first, so sat at the hairdressers with my hair in curlers, I coordinated the delivery and care of nine wedding dresses over the phone. With my newborn daughter in tow, I changed in to my bridesmaid dress and literally just got to the church on time to see my brother get married. Phew!
