A PLAN to convert a former public toilet on an already busy road in to a takeaway in Ulverston has been met with objections from councillors.

Members of Ulverston Town Council said the increased traffic the takeaway would attract to Priory Road would pose too much danger to road users.

“That particular part of Ulverston is extremely busy,” said Cllr Colin Pickthall.

“I think this plan would cause quite considerable traffic problems in that area.”

Cllr David Webster added: “It’s not a safe road at all.

"There’s not enough parking as it is for the Co-op and the Old Farmhouse pub.

"It’s just too much for that area. If it was to be a sit-in and takeaway (restaurant) there’s just not enough space and it will be a dangerous place.”

Members were not unanimous in their objection with some councillors supporting a motion from Cllr Pauline Halfpenny to back the proposal.

She told members: “Traffic is calmed on that road by the fact there are quite a lot of people parked there already. I’ve spoken to a lot of locals and I don’t think it’s up to us to deprive people of a takeaway.”

Councillors voted to recommend refusal of the proposal, which lies with South Lakeland District Council.
