THE Ulverston Post Office, which campaigners fought to keep open, is to hold a public 'drop in' consultation over the future running of the service.

The plans for the branch, announced in November, are that it will remain at County Square, Ulverston.

The same range of Post Office services will remain available and opening hours will be extended to include Saturday afternoons.

Initially it was announced that the Post Office would close, however a campaign by local people and MP John Woodcock, which saw thousands of signatures gathered in support of the service remaining open, ensured the survival of the branch.

One campaigner, Malcolm Tyson, walked close to 500 miles collecting signatures on the petition.

The petition was then taken to parliament by Mr Woodcock.

The drop in session, which is part of a public consultation on the proposals, will be held on Thursday January 11 at The Flannery Centre, St Mary of Furness, Ulverston.

People are welcome to attend at any point between 3.30pm and 7pm.

The plans for the branch include the refurbishment of the premises with a new, modern open-plan Post Office branch installed in a dedicated area alongside a retail business selling cards and confectionary.

There would be three serving positions with opening hours of 9am until 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

The public consultation ends on January 22.
