A BILL which would make it a legal requirement that people should not have to travel more than the national guideline of 45 minutes to reach their nearest radiotherapy centre has been presented in the House of Commons by South Lakes MP Tim Farron.

Currently most people needing radiotherapy treatment in the South Lakes have to travel over an hour to their nearest radiotherapy unit in Preston.

“It’s simply unacceptable that people suffering with cancer in South Cumbria are forced to make two to three-hour round trips in order to receive life-saving care.

“This bill would make it necessary for there to be a radiotherapy unit brought to Kendal's Westmorland General Hospital.

“Today is another step forward in winning our campaign, and I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us so far.”
