100 YEARS AGO - 1918
A number of Kendal boys ventured onto the ice on the canal on Monday, and one of them, a lad called Dennison, living on Lound Street, had a narrow escape of being drowned. He was more venturesome than the others and essayed across the canal but went through the ice by gashouse bridge.
50 YEARS AGO - 1968
Westmorland's newest school, Milnthorpe secondary modern, incorporating many of the latest ideas in school architecture and planning, opened without any formal ceremony on Wednesday after having been in the building stage for two years. It has cost £140,000.
25 YEARS AGO - 1993
Kendal police are appealing for help in the hunt for an armed robber who held up the Green Road off-licence at the junction of Windermere Road, Kendal, by brandishing a gun and forced the assistant to hand over £250.
