A SPECIAL coffee has been created to help a South Lakeland artist in her fight against breast cancer.

Carlisle coffee roaster John Watt & Son is now selling ‘Super Sara Blend’ at its two shops and online.

It has been inspired by Sara Last - a Cumbrian pottery and ceramics artist who works from a studio at Brougham Hall near Penrith called Saramics Studio.

Sara was born in Barrow-in-Furness, spent time living in Ulverston and now resides near Kendal.

After discovering a lump in September 2017 the 44-year-old was diagnosed with two forms of breast cancer a month later and has undergone a mastectomy and chemotherapy treatment.

Her friend Jennifer Pollard is a coffee roaster at John Watt & Son and she decided to team up with the business owners Peter and Carol Johnston to develop a brand in aid of breast cancer grant-making trust The Pink Ribbon Foundation.

They have utilised coffee beans that have been grown by women’s projects, which fund health and education for women in sub-Saharan Africa.

All profits from sales of the coffee will be donated to the Foundation which supports charities helping thousands of women like Sara.

“When I found out what Sara was going through I just wanted to be there for her and do something positive,” said Jennifer.

“Creating this coffee will raise money for people with breast cancer and hopefully also increase awareness about the disease.”

Sara said: “Hearing the news you’ve been diagnosed with cancer is pretty hard to describe really. It’s a whole mix of emotions - shock, fear, uncertainty and the hope that you’ll just get through it all in the end.

“While the last four months or so have been the hardest of my life, the experience has made more determined to fight back even harder.

“It was a lovely surprise when I found out what Jen and John Watt & Son were doing. There certainly aren’t many people who can say they’ve got a coffee named after them!”
