A KENDAL man who attacked his friend with a hammer after learning he was in a relationship with his mother has been jailed for two years.
Carlisle Crown Court heard Kaylam Megson became angry and turned violent at an address in Buttery Well Lane on October 18 last year.
After borrowing his mother's mobile phone he discovered "sexually explicit messages" involving Ashley Duffus, who was also present.
Megson, who had been drinking, used a hammer to floor Mr Duffus with a powerful blow to his temple. As his grounded victim raised his arms to protect himself, Megson struck him two or three times to his ribs, resulting in breathing problems, a partially collapsed lung and an overnight hospital stay.
Today Megson, no fixed address, was jailed for 24 months having admitted assaulting Mr Duffus, causing him actual bodily harm.
Recorder Julie Clemitson, who heard mitigation on the defendant's behalf, told him: "This sort of injury and hitting somebody with a hammer in this way could have been so much worse."
