"ENTHUSIASTIC and cheerful" volunteers for the Lancaster Canal Trust gave up 1,800 hours to work parties, pleasure boat trips and other tasks in 2017.

They are thanked for their efforts in the trust's latest newsletter, which also outlines continued efforts to restore the waterway's First Furlong - a 255-metre stretch of canal from Stainton Crossing bridge to Sellet Hall bridge near Stainton.

Volunteers have been getting their hands dirty clearing vegetation and top soil with the help of an eight-tonne digger, ready to line the canal bed with leak-proof sheeting before re-watering it.

The trust says it has only two experienced digger drivers and it is keen to attract more, given its restoration plans over the next few years. If you would like to be trained up, or to volunteer in any capacity - from physical work to publicity, crewing on trip boat Waterwitch or fundraising - email chair@lancastercanaltrust.org.uk

The next weekend-long work parties are to take place on February 10 and 11, and March 14 and 15. Hard hats, hi-vis jackets and work gloves are provided and volunteers are advised to take warm clothes, sturdy boots or wellies, a packed lunch and drinks.
