COMMERCIAL passenger flights will jet into Carlisle Lake District Airport this summer for the first time in 25 years.
The two paved runways at the Crosby-on-Eden airport, six miles east of Carlisle, last welcomed passenger jet planes in 1993.
Airport owner Stobart Group has begun work on a new passenger terminal building ready for the launch of the new flights on June 4. Cumbria and the Lake District will be connected to locations including London, Dublin and Belfast; and a major economic boost to the county's tourism and industry is predicted.
Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership has committed £4.95 million to the project. Executive director Graham Haywood said: "Developing the airport’s passenger offer will provide smoother, quicker access to local tourism attractions and help to increase international tourism visits."
