A PROTESTOR who set up camp on Kendal's New Road has had his belongings removed from the site.
On Friday (Janaury 19) afternoon a notice was stuck to Jeff Hayton's tent by South Lakeland District Council (SLDC), giving him 48 hours to leave the common land.
The note stated that he was 'unlawfully occupying' the land and that failure to leave the land may result in criminal proceedings and council officers removing any person who 'commits or whom he reasonably suspects of committing, an offence against any of the byelaws'.
A spokesperson for South Lakeland District Council said that before issuing the notice, they first visited the camp to establish if he was homeless and in need of support but found that he was not.
“On Monday this week enforcement officers attended the site with police and cleared the camp," the spokesperson said. "All the items removed were placed in safe storage at the council’s depot and the man was informed in writing that he could collect his belongings from the depot within 28 days. The man has since been in touch with the council and made arrangements to collect his belongings from the depot."
