Astronomers at Kendal are planning a range of events to shed light on the night sky during 2018.

Public events by the Eddington Astronomical Society include the popular 'Moonwatch', hosted by the Brewery Arts Centre – the next one is scheduled for Saturday, February 24, weather permitting.

In July there will be 'Eclipse Watch' for a total eclipse of the Moon, visible as the Moon rises in the evening.

The society’s indoor meetings take place on the first Monday of each month (or the second, if the first is a bank holiday) at Kendal Museum, from 7pm to 9pm.

A typical meeting will include:

• a talk by a visiting professional astronomer with time reserved for Q&A

• a look at what’s going on in the night sky this month

• a review of the latest news in astronomy and space exploration

• a detailed short talk on a constellation or night sky object

• a presentation of members’ night sky photographs

New members of the society are always welcome. Its policy is to 'try before you buy' so it costs nothing for someone to come to a meeting and see whether they would like to join.

Stargazing nights (known as 'Observing Evenings') are well attended by members and guests.

Newly-elected chairman of the EAS Simon White said: “It was an honour to be elected to chair this remarkable society, following Stuart Atkinson’s decision to step down last year after running the show for ten years.

"Stuart is Mr Astronomy, not only in Kendal but in the whole of Cumbria, and we shall miss his boundless energy.

"With the help of our enthusiastic committee, I am determined that the Eddington Astronomical Society will continue to play an important role as an engaging, informative and educational resource in Kendal’s calendar.”

Details of the society’s programme for 2018 can be found online at www.eas-online.org.uk. The society also runs a dedicated notice board upstairs in Kendal library, where the events calendar is on display.

Membership is £20 per year, with concessions for retired/U18.
