CANCER patients from south Cumbria and north Lancashire can expect shorter and more comfortable radiotherapy treatment, thanks to a new piece of equipment.
Rosemere Cancer Foundation is funding the new imaging kit, which will enable medical physicists to improve the delivery of the latest high-dose-rate radiotherapy.
For the hundreds of people being treated at Preston's Rosemere Cancer Centre, there will be major benefits, says the charity - treatment will be quicker and more comfortable, and less radiation will reach healthy tissue outside the area being treated. This in turn will reduce the risk of long-term side effects, which is especially important for younger cancer survivors.
The Phantom equipment costs £8,120 and will be used to help physicists accurately measure beam dosage and delivery accuracy to treat patients with a range of cancers, including brain, lung and prostate.
