A SILVER brooch found in south Cumbria has been declared as treasure at an inquest.
The item, found by metal detectorist Matthew Kitching, was discovered on land near Burton-in-Kendal on May 1 last year.
Cumbria assistant coroner Paul O'Donnell told the inquest at Barrow Town Hall that experts at London's British Museum described it a medieval silver annular brooch, dated from the 13th to 14th centuries.
Under the Treasure Act, for an item to be treasure, it must be at least 300 years old, not a coin, and contain at least 10 per cent precious metal.

Mr O'Donnell concluded the brooch met the criteria and declared it treasure.
A valuation committee will now be tasked with determining the worth of the brooch.
